Sharing Our Stories is a series of 14 books that presents studies of indigenous culture. Each book in the series shares a traditional story from an Indigenous community. The stories convey messages connected to the community’s tradtions, cultural practices and creation beliefs.
The Story of Girbar is a creation story that the people from Sabai community have chosen to share with us. Sabai community is located on the island of Sabai, one of the northern most island of the Torres Strait. The story is traditionally told in Kalaw Kawaw Ya language, and has been presented in English for Sharing Our Stories.
