This is a practical ‘how to’ resource for primary teachers who have ESL students in their classrooms.
It helps teachers to adapt typical classroom learning experiences, and allows student to be more fully
immersed in the language models of their peers, while at the same time learning the English content that
is critical to their further skills development.

Unit 4: How to make and keep friends
Unit 5: How to be healthy
Unit 6: How to join a club or group
Unit 7: How to borrow from the library
Unit 8: How to use public transport
Unit 9: How to go shopping
Unit 10: How to help with the cooking at home

Each unit contains:
– a key word list into categories for easier learning
– a page of sample sentences and phrases
– a page of suggested teacher activities related to the topic
– 5 student pages which encourage students to learn to read, write and say the words from the key words list,
as well as learn basic information about the topic which will assist them in managing on a practical, day to day
level with life in a new society.
